Short answer: A rigid diamond lapping film and water may be appropriate for a defined early material-removal step, but they cannot replace the complete MPO/MT polishing process. The final result must control fiber protrusion, coplanarity, end-face defects, and optical performance across the whole fiber array.

MPO/MT Ferrules Are a Different Polishing Problem

An MPO connector uses an MT ferrule to align multiple fibers in one rectangular interface. As explained in our MPO connector guide, that multi-fiber structure introduces alignment, polarity, pin, and end-face considerations that do not exist in the same way for a single-fiber connector.

Most common LC, SC, FC, and ST connectors use a cylindrical ceramic ferrule. An MT ferrule, by contrast, is generally a thermoplastic or thermoset polymer component with an array of fiber holes and guide-pin holes. The polymer ferrule and the glass fibers do not respond to an abrasive in the same way, so the polishing goal is not simply to make the entire surface look flat and bright.

Controlled Fiber Protrusion and Coplanarity Matter

For an MPO/MT assembly, the fibers are designed to finish at a controlled height relative to the polymer ferrule face. This is called fiber protrusion. The individual fiber heights must also be closely matched; that relationship is called coplanarity. If one fiber is too high, too low, or damaged while others look acceptable, the mated array may not make reliable physical contact across every channel.

That is why a glossy surface is not an acceptance criterion by itself. A multi-fiber end face must be evaluated for visible defects, geometry, fiber-height consistency, and the applicable optical test requirements.

Why a Standard Diamond Film and Water Alone Fall Short

A Rigid Abrasive Cannot Control the Whole Geometry by Itself

In a controlled factory process, a specified rigid abrasive can be useful for epoxy removal or initial shaping. However, the MPO patch cord manufacturing process is multi-step because each stage must prepare the next one without losing fiber-array consistency.

When a generic rigid diamond film is treated as the complete solution, it may remove material quickly but does not by itself manage the different removal behavior of polymer and glass. The result can include persistent scratches, unstable fiber height, poor coplanarity, or geometry outside the requirement. The issue is not that diamond film is universally forbidden for MPO; it is that abrasive type, grit size, pressure, fixture, and sequence must be matched to the actual MT ferrule and the approved process.

Water Is a Process Medium, Not a Complete Polishing System

Water can wet a polishing film, reduce friction, help carry debris away, and support cleaning. It is therefore useful in many qualified polishing procedures. But water contains no graded abrasive and does not create the controlled chemical-mechanical action used in fine or final finishing. Water alone cannot generate the required fiber protrusion, remove all microscopic end-face defects, or preserve geometry after a rough stage.

A flocked or other compliant finishing medium is valuable because it provides a more forgiving interface during fine polishing. With an appropriately controlled fine abrasive, it can help address small defects while preserving the fiber geometry already created in earlier stages. The correct material is not a universal product choice: it depends on the MT ferrule material, connector design, fiber type, machine, and required finish.

After polishing, inspect the end face for scratches, pits, epoxy residue, debris, and contamination. Check the applicable geometry and fiber-height criteria, then verify the optical requirements agreed for the assembly. For a multi-fiber connector, this means evaluating the array rather than assuming that one clean-looking area represents every fiber position.

Correct post-process handling also matters. Follow an approved fiber optic cleaning and inspection method so that the polished end face, every fiber position, and the guide-pin area are not recontaminated or damaged before mating.

A buyer does not need to dictate a polishing recipe. The useful task is to make the required assembly and acceptance conditions unambiguous. Confirm the fiber count, fiber type, connector pin configuration, end-face type, polarity, and the relevant inspection and optical-test requirements. Our guide on specifying MPO/MTP patch cords for high-density deployments explains why those details should be reconciled before a cable is ordered or built.

For project work, ask how the approved sample, material set, drawing revision, and test criteria are controlled for repeat production. This creates a clearer quality discussion than asking only whether an end face has a mirror finish.

Yes. Water can be used as part of an approved procedure for wetting, lubrication, debris removal, or rinsing. It is not a substitute for the selected abrasive media or the fine finishing stage.

     </details>

Usually not. Epoxy removal, fiber-height generation, micro-scratch removal, and final geometry retention are different objectives. A staged process assigns each objective to a suitable medium and control method.

     </details>

A compliant finishing interface can support fine defect removal while reducing the risk of disturbing the controlled relationship between the glass fibers and the polymer ferrule face. Factory polishing is a controlled multi-step process. In the field, start with the applicable cleaning, inspection, and fault-isolation procedure. MPO/MT polishing is a controlled geometry-and-quality process, not a single grinding action. A standard diamond film and water may have a place in an approved early stage, but they cannot replace the complete sequence required to manage fiber protrusion, coplanarity, micro-defects, cleaning, and final verification.

When specifying an MPO/MTP cable assembly for a high-density link, align the required fiber count, polarity, fiber type, and end-face test requirements with the cable supplier before production.
