It uses a small, controlled electric arc to melt and fuse the glass ends of two fibers. The result, when done correctly, is a seamless joint where the light signal can continue traveling almost as if there were no break at all.A good splice has very little signal loss \u2014 typically less than <strong data-start=\"1454\" data-end=\"1465\">0.05 dB<\/strong>. Also, always wear safety glasses \u2014 stripped fiber fragments are sharp and almost invisible.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2fa9a02 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2fa9a02\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Step-by-Step: How to Splice Optical Fiber<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cf269d4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cf269d4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"2396\" data-end=\"2498\">Although modern splicers automate much of the process, understanding each step helps you perform cleaner, more reliable splices.<br data-start=\"2939\" data-end=\"2942\" \/>Below is a typical sequence that most technicians follow.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-54af845 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"54af845\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">1. Cleave the Fiber End Face<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-492643e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"492643e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"1744\" data-end=\"1849\">This step determines how well the two fibers will join.<br data-start=\"3974\" data-end=\"3977\" \/>Use a high-precision fiber cleaver to cut the fiber end as flat and perpendicular as possible \u2014 ideally with a cleave angle less than <strong data-start=\"4111\" data-end=\"4123\">1 degree<\/strong>.<br data-start=\"4124\" data-end=\"4127\" \/>A poor cleave will always result in high splice loss, no matter how advanced your machine is.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-337ce00 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"337ce00\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">5. Place the Fibers in the Splicer<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e02d724 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e02d724\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"4266\" data-end=\"4667\">Now, insert both fibers into the splicer\u2019s holders. Make sure you\u2019re aligning the correct pair \u2014 for instance, matching fibers of the same color or label.<br data-start=\"4420\" data-end=\"4423\" \/>In most modern splicers, the system will automatically <strong data-start=\"4478\" data-end=\"4503\">align the fiber cores<\/strong> using image processing and motorized stages.<br data-start=\"4548\" data-end=\"4551\" \/>For older or manual models, you\u2019ll need to adjust the alignment manually using the built-in microscope and controls.<\/p><p data-start=\"4669\" data-end=\"4750\">When everything looks aligned, close the lid and let the machine perform its job.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-815fce8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"815fce8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">6. Once finished, the machine will usually display the estimated splice loss \u2014 a good result should be below <strong data-start=\"5037\" data-end=\"5048\">0.05 dB<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"5051\" data-end=\"5184\">When removing the fiber, <strong data-start=\"5076\" data-end=\"5096\">keep it straight<\/strong>.<br data-start=\"5097\" data-end=\"5100\" \/>Never push or bend the ends inward \u2014 that\u2019s the easiest way to crack a fresh splice.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d53b412 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d53b412\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">7.
